RakEm-WhatsApp

How is RakEM more secure and private than WhatsApp?

There is a lot of confusion and noise around end-to-end encryption – which the vast majority of vendors who claim to support end-to-end encryption mean encryption in transit not encryption of content in transit.

To summarize:

  1. RaKEM device to device direct transmission (p2p) meaning no servers vs WhatsApp storing all messages on their servers
  2. RakEM encrypts the locally stored messages on the users device vs WhatsApp that does not encrypt the locally stored messages – they are clear text.
  3. RakEM users can ‘unsend’ messages, wiping them off their device and the recipients device vs WhatsApp that does not have unsend
  4. RakEM uses our patent pending self-mutating encryption, that encrypts the content differently each time it is sent. WhatsApp uses an encryption method involving public private key which don’t change every time.
  5. RakEM encrypts everything – messages, location, pics, doodles, voice, video, including voice and video calling.
  6. WhatsApp’s parent, Facebook, has said it will be adding advertising to WhatsApp later this year – how will it target these ads if WhatsApp (and Facebook) cannot read your messages? RakEM has no way to read your messages, we don’t see them and we don’t have ads.
  7. RakEM, using our device to device direct transmission, does not see nor does it store you message meta-data on our servers, vs WhatsApp that sees and stores your message metadata on their servers.
  8. Signal Systems (Open Whisper Systems), the encryption used by WhatsApp, was funded by the U.S. government, and is still funded by the U.S. government. RakEM is not funded by the U.S. government, nor has it ever been – we are independent – no backdoors.

More details:

  1. RakEM encrypts the content and uses peer-to-peer direct transmission between devices – we don’t see your messages on our servers, so if we were asked to produce message logs, etc. we would comply and provide nothing since we have nothing. WhatsApp stores the messages on their servers – making it an easier target for hackers.
  2. Your message content is stored locally on the senders device and the recipients device – we encrypt all this content locally, we do not rely on the OS for encryption. So even if the FBI was able to ‘break’ the encrypted iPhone, when they looked at the RakEM files, they would be encrypted and not readable. WhatsApp does not encrypt the locally stored messages – they are clear text – which means that if the FBI or anyone else can ‘break’ the encrypted iPhone, the WhatsApp messages would be easily readable.
  3. Users can ‘unsend’ messages off their device and off the recipients device (reciprocal deletion). They can do this message by message, all messages to/from a given contact, and we even have a 1 button ‘Total Recall’ that deletes all your messages to/from all your contacts off your device and off the recipient devices. WhatsApp does not have an ‘unsend’ feature.
  4. RakEM uses our patent pending self-mutating encryption, that encrypts the content differently each time it is sent – ie. each message looks different from the previous and next message even if the content is the same, which makes it incredibly difficult for a hacker to decipher, and even if they do decipher 1 message, it is not applicable to the previous or future messages.. WhatsApp uses an encryption method involving public private key which don’t change every time - this means that an encrypted message with the content of ‘Hi’ for example, will always be encrypted the same way, no matter how many times it’s sent – which makes it that much easier for a hacker to decipher, and once deciphered, they will have the keys for all previous and future messages.
Message metadata has information like who sent who a message, when, where they sent it from, where the receiver was, and more. This data can be used for many purposes, including surveillance, marketing ads, etc.
  8. Signal Systems (Open Whisper Systems), the encryption used by WhatsApp, was funded by the U.S. government, and is still funded by the U.S. government. This could lead to developments including the insertion of backdoors for surveillance purposes – which could already be in place. RakEM is not  funded by the U.S. government, nor has it ever been – we are independent – no backdoors.
